west-east section at 76° south, north of the A23A iceberg, which hadn’t been possible in the past due to the adverse ice conditions. These measurements will now supplement the data from moorings that have constantly recorded the temperature, depth, salinity and flow speed of water masses in the southern Weddell Sea for the past four years. 2013-05-18 · Iceberg A63 A23A A61 A62 A57 A56 B09D B16 B17A B15Y B15K B15R B15X B15B B09C B09G B09FB09B B30 B22A B29 B28 B15T C21B C24 C15 C16 C28A C28B C18B D20 D15 D14 Week of: 29 April 2013 Size NM (Length Latitude Longitude 11X3 76.67S 43.67W 44X36 75.96S 40.90W 13X4 72.21S 16.01W 13X5 57.78S 30.95W… Based upon thermal-infrared satellite imagery in combination with ERA-Interim atmospheric reanalysis data, we derive long-term polynya characteristics such as polynya area, thin-ice thickness distribution, and ice-production rates for a 13-year investigation period (2002-2014) for the austral winter (1 April to 30 September) in the Antarctic southern Weddell Sea. The break-up of A68a means the largest iceberg is now A23a, which broke off from Antarctica in 1986 but has remained grounded on the sea floor. Sea with a glacier front of around 450 km. In the far right is seen a huge iceberg (A23a) that measures more than 60 by 60 kilometer, thus is similar in size to Fyn! The large icebergs around Antarctica are registered by the National Ice Centre in Washington, and they are given name with a defined system. An iceberg with a name The world's second-largest ice shelf was the destination for a POLARSTERN expedition that ended in Punta Arenas, Chile on 14th March 2018.

Iceberg A68a is big. Almost half the size of Jamaica. Three times the size of London. Larger than Rhode Island. And it is on the move. After breaking off from the Antarctic ice shelf three years ago, it is closing in on some of the world’s largest penguin colonies on South Georgia Island, a remote British territory in the South Atlantic, where it could block them from their hunting grounds An iceberg that had been the world’s largest is now breaking into pieces close to the island of South Georgia in the South Atlantic. Scientists had worried about the impact on the remote island’s wildlife if the berg had grounded on its continental shelf.

Fast ice, icebergs and benthic blue carbon. The Southern Ocean sea surface features striking contrasts in albedo between open water and sea ice, and as such remote sensing is an ideal tool to detect trends in sea-ice spatial and temporal extent [].Satellite data can be enhanced (when cloud obscures satellite image capture) and ground-truthed by in situ manually operated or remote image capture. 2015-08-07 Sea with a glacier front of around 450 km.

A23a iceberg

A23A is not leaving the Weddell Sea anytime soon in my opinion although ice formation to the south may help move it north during Iceberg A23A has moved significantly over the winter and is not classified as grounded anymore by the National Ice Center. According to their iceberg tables it happened in Week 28 (between 3rd and 10th July). However since then it hasn't moved much.

A23a iceberg

The iceberg A22A was photographed when it was about a third of the distance from South America towards Cape Town, South Africa. A22A is one of the largest icebergs to drift as far north as 50 degrees south latitude, bringing it beneath the daylight path of the International Space Station (ISS). A series of parallel lines can be seen in the lower image.

A23 was formed in August 1986 from the Filchner Ice Shelf Front , and at formation it had an area of ~3,850 km 2 , and was ~5-600 m thick ( Grosfeld et al, 2001 ). As explained in earlier reports the way was not easy, among other things in our way southwest we had to surround the A23A iceberg, a block of ice about twice the size of Luxembourg and with approximately 1480 G tons! Iceberg A68a is big. Three times the size of London.
